앱스토어에서 '프리셀'을 치면 스무 개가 넘게 나옵니다. 저도 그중 넷을 받아 봤습니다. 카드 그림이 조금씩 다를 뿐 하는 일은 다 같았고, 판 위로 광고가 지나갔습니다.
한 가지가 계속 걸렸습니다. 지금 여는 이 판이 어려운 판인지 아닌지를 아무도 말해 주지 않는다. 다들 "모든 판을 깰 수 있습니다"라고 적어 둡니다. 프리셀은 원래 거의 모든 판이 깨집니다. 그 말은 아무것도 알려 주지 않습니다.
삼십 분을 붙들고 못 깨고 나면 묻게 됩니다. 내가 못한 건가, 원래 어려운 판인가. 그걸 알려 주는 프리셀을 못 찾아서 만들었습니다.
판을 열면 앱이 뒤에서 그 판을 실제로 끝까지 두어 봅니다. 몇 번을 되돌아와야 풀리는지 세어서 등급을 붙입니다. 쉬움, 보통, 어려움, 아주 어려움.
절반이 쉬움으로 나옵니다. 잣대가 무른 게 아니라 프리셀이 원래 그런 게임입니다. 다섯 판에 한 판꼴로 어려움 위가 나오고, 스물일곱 판에 하나가 아주 어려움입니다. 그러니까 아주 어려움을 깼다면, 그건 정말 그런 판이었던 겁니다.
독한 판만 치고 싶은 날에는 그렇게 청하면 됩니다. 앱이 찾아서 엽니다.
"1,284판 깼습니다"는 별 뜻이 없습니다. 기록이 판 번호로 남으면 이야기가 달라집니다.
#617은 프리셀 좀 둔다는 사람들 사이에서 알려진 판입니다. 이 앱의 잣대로도 아주 어려움이 나옵니다. 기록실에서 그 줄을 열면 이렇게 적혀 있습니다.

세 번째에 깼고, 한 번도 무르지 않았다는 뜻입니다. 다음에 #617을 다시 열면 이 줄이 판 위에 함께 뜹니다. 오늘의 나와 그때의 내가 같은 판에서 겨룹니다.
그리고 이 번호는 당신 폰에만 있는 번호가 아닙니다. 처음 나온 프리셀과 같은 방식으로 카드를 섞기 때문에, #617은 누구의 폰에서나 같은 판입니다. 번호 하나만 보내면 친구가 같은 배치를 마주합니다.
1번부터 32,000번까지가 이 앱이 다루는 전부입니다. 처음 나온 프리셀이 딱 그만큼을 담고 있었습니다.
기록실에는 그 32,000판이 한 화면에 깔린 지도가 있습니다. 점 하나가 판 하나입니다. 깬 판은 금빛, 두다 만 판은 흐리게, 아직 열지 않은 판은 비어 있습니다. 처음 열면 온통 비어 있고, 몇 달 두고 나면 별자리처럼 됩니다.
깰 수 없는 판이 딱 하나 섞여 있습니다. #11982입니다. 그 판은 붉은 점 하나로 남아 있고, 열려고 하면 앱이 먼저 알려 줍니다.
프리셀에서 지는 방식은 대개 이렇습니다. 한참 전에 한 수를 잘못 뒀는데 그게 어디였는지 모른 채 끝납니다.
물어보면 됩니다. 앱이 당신이 둔 수를 거꾸로 되짚어서 아직 이길 수 있었던 마지막 자리를 찾아냅니다. 그리고 거기로 돌아갈지 묻습니다.

경쟁 앱들의 리뷰를 읽어 보면 불평의 절반이 광고입니다. 닫히지 않는 광고, 소리를 멋대로 키우는 광고, 판을 다 깬 순간에 끼어드는 광고.
이 앱에는 광고가 없습니다. 추적도, 계정도, 서버도 없습니다. 두던 판과 기록은 폰 안에만 있고 아무 데도 가지 않습니다. 비행기 모드에서도 똑같이 돌아갑니다.
솔리테어는 혼자 조용히 하는 놀이입니다. 그 조용한 것을 팔지 않기로 했습니다.

Search the App Store for FreeCell and you get twenty of them. I downloaded four. The card faces differed a little; nothing else did, and ads ran across the board.
One thing kept bothering me. None of them tells you whether the deal you are about to open is a hard one. They all say "every game is winnable" — but in FreeCell nearly every game is winnable, so that sentence says nothing. After half an hour of losing you are left wondering whether you played badly or drew a monster.
When you open a deal, the app plays it out in the background and counts how much backtracking it takes. Easy, Normal, Hard, Very hard. Half of all deals come out Easy — that is just what FreeCell is. One in five lands above Hard, and one in twenty-seven is Very hard. So when you clear a Very hard one, it really was one.
"1,284 games won" means very little. Records kept by deal number mean something else.

Cleared on the third try, never undone. Open #617 again and that line sits above the board. And the number is not private to your phone: the app shuffles the way the original FreeCell did, so #617 is the same deal on anyone's phone. Send a friend a number and they face your layout.
Deals 1 through 32,000 — exactly what the first FreeCell shipped with. Records holds a map of all of them on one screen, a dot per deal: gold for cleared, faint for played, empty for untouched. It starts blank and ends up looking like a star chart. One deal in there cannot be won at all (#11982), and the app warns you before you open it.
You usually lose FreeCell by making one bad move long before you notice. Ask the app and it walks back through your moves, finds the last position that could still have been won, and offers to take you there. I have not seen another FreeCell answer that question.
Half the complaints in the reviews of the big FreeCell apps are about ads. There are none here, and no tracking, no account, no server. Your games and your records stay on the phone. It works the same in airplane mode.
Solitaire is a quiet thing you do alone. I decided not to sell the quiet.
